From Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project, via BoingBoing, this list of Tolstoy's "10 Rules of Life." I think this is a pretty good list, well all except for the keep away from women...thoughts?
Get up early (five o'clock)
Go to bed early (nine to ten o'clock)
Eat little and avoid sweets
Try to do everything by yourself
Have a goal for your whole life, a goal for one section of your life, a goal for a shorter period and a goal for the year; a goal for every month, a goal for every week, a goal for every day, a goal for every hour and for evry minute, and sacrifice the lesser goal to the greater
Keep away from women
Kill desire by work
Be good, but try to let no one know it
Always live less expensively than you might
Change nothing in your style of living even if you become ten times richer

Tolstoy doesn't sound like anyone I'd want to be friends with.
It' an interesting list, with a very ascetic connotation. But if I have to wake up at 5 am it will be the misery project for me, rather than the happiness project.
Also, I wonder what he means by trying to do everything by yourself. Is that even possible? Excessive self-sufficiency is another way to avoid living a full life really...
wow that is seriously an awesome list of things. They definitely apply, I love the going to bed early and waking up early part! It's so true! And also eating small amounts and cutting down on sweets. As for the avoid women part... hmm... it can be good I think, to avoid those relationships in general, especially the short ones. You should really only have a couple, or even one, in your whole life!
